Artifacts and Characteristics of the Novice Teacher #6

  1. Today in class I brought in my workstations assignment from Education 461. For this assignment, I chose to create Tier 1 instruction for a fourth grade class. My instruction included 30 minutes of whole group instruction, 30 minutes of writing instruction, and 30 minutes of small group instruction and literacy workstations. The instruction I chose to implement was a literature focus unit pattern of practice. I decided to base the instruction on an important children's author from West Virginia, Cynthia Rylant. I used the novel, Missing May, along with several other picture books by Cynthia Rylant. The small groups were geared toward different ability levels, and throughout the whole group there were accommodations made for above average learners and below average learners.

This assignment fit under several different characteristics; however, I think the most appropriate characteristic it illustrated was #6, which states, "We believe that the novice teacher should have in-depth knowledge of content." For this assignment, I had to consistently plan for a variety of ability levels and use a variety of instructional strategies. I had to select and organize the content I wanted to teach and I had to draw from knowledge I previously had about different skills I wanted to teach everyday and relate them to the chapter or chapters I had planned for the students to read for the day. This assignment took me a very long time to complete, but it will be useful for when I have a classroom of my own. It also gave me practice in planning workstations.

  2. I think that your workstations project definitely fits under Characteristic #6 of the novice teacher because you really did need to have an in-depth knowledge of content in order to complete this assignment, while understanding the differing abilities of your students. I also believe that your project could have fit under characteristic #5 because you needed to have a knowledge of instructional models and teaching strategies in order to differentiate instruction for your students and their varying abilities.
